The Secretary General

The Secretary General of the Union is appointed by the Council of the Union through a competitive process for a 5-year mandate, which can be renewed.

The Secretary General has the following responsibilities:

  • manages the activities of the Union
  • signs contracts on behalf of the Union
  • prepares the draft budget of the Union and ensures its execution
  • recruits and runs the secretariat of the Union
